5 reasons why studying A Level PE could help secure your dream career
Contributing over £39 billion to the UK’s economy, the UK sports industry is a huge industry which only continues to grow with the development of grassroots sport.
With the continued growth of this sector comes an increase in career opportunities for students looking to study Physical Education.
Keep on reading to find out how studying PE at A Level could help prepare you for a rewarding and successful career.
1) Our A Level programme is the perfect steppingstone to University Level study
It’s important to have something to aim for. Not only does our A Level study programme provide our learners with a great qualification, but it is also a brilliant way to open up a range of career opportunities through further study at university. You will have the chance to apply for a variety of different university courses, including:
- sports development
- sports coaching
- physiotherapy
- personal training
- or training to become one of the next generation of PE teachers
The UK is also known for having a range of prestigious sporting universities, including: Loughborough, Northumbria, Liverpool John Moores, and Leeds Beckett Universities, meaning there are plenty of options for further study outside of Sheffield.
However, should you want to study a bit closer to home we also offer a Sports Coaching and Exercise Foundation Degree right here at The Sheffield College.
2) The range of careers available to you is huge
The true strength of this study programme is just how varied of a career you can pursue following completion of the programme.
For many learners, the aim will be a career within elite sport, whether this be supporting top athletes as sports scientists, sports psychologists, strength and conditioning coaches, sports therapists or coaches.
Alternatively, you may choose to pursue a career in teaching.
With the huge development of grassroot sports, the need for self employed coaches, sports therapists, sports psychologists, and other roles has also increased ten-fold providing even more career options following the completion of your studies.
3) Our study programme includes both practical and theoretical study
The working world is competitive, that’s why you need to be confident in your abilities and knowledge; especially when a huge part of your career could involve working with and on others.
That's why, as a part of this study programme, you will develop both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, which will become the foundation of your understanding of physical education. You will develop an all-round comprehension of sports performance as well as a wide-ranging knowledge into the how and why of physical activity.
As a part of the study programme, you will also be required to take part in a sport at a competitive level as part of the entry requirements. By doing so, you will be able to put the theoretical knowledge you are learning into further practice.
4) Our study programme will help you develop transferable skills
A huge part of securing a career in sport involves the ability to work well with others; which, along with a host of other transferable skills including communication, independent thinking and decision making, could be the difference between successfully applying for a position or not.
Our study programme has been developed to ensure that throughout your studies you will develop the transferable skills you need to be successful within the industry, as well as give you an opportunity to use these skills in real-world scenarios.
5) Work experience opportunities with key employers
At The Sheffield Sixth Form, we know how important it is for our learners to have experience of the working world before beginning their careers.
During your time with us, you will be given the opportunity to undertake work experience alongside your A Levels. This could take the form of volunteering, youth work, or even sports coaching.
Additionally, we have fantastic links with key sports employers across the region, such as Sheffield Sharks and Sheffield United. As such, we will often invite visiting speakers to come and present during timetabled sessions in order to further provide you with expert knowledge that will benefit you throughout your career.
